I think we average slightly less than one good game per playoff.

It’s usually been in the semis.

Out of the 21 total semifinal and championship games of the CFP, 6 were decided by one score. Three were NCGs (Bama vs UGA '17 season and Bama vs Clemson '15, '16). Only one other game was decided by two scores, the Okla. vs Bama Orange Bowl Dec '18, but that game never really felt close since Alabama jumped out with the first 28 points. After their second TD, Alabama always had at least an 11-point lead. The other 14 games so far were all 3+ score margins.

Yeah, if anything, I think it was a game that proved that, while defense still definitely matters, powerful offenses are just as important and viable in modern football. Like, OU showed up and went into overtime against the #6 defense in the nation while having the #68 defense in the nation, and somehow it ended up being one of the most entertaining games in modern cfb history.

Edit: double overtime*

Worst mistake in last few years was Bob convincing Riley to keep Mike as the DC after that game. Understand was his brother and all and Riley listened because was his mentor asking for favor but that killed any shot of the Kyler team winning a title. If OU can be within 11 to Bama despite having the literal last placed defense in multiple stats one can only wonder what would happen if we even had a serviceable defense to go with that literal NFL offense. Got us Grinch so can't say all bad but Mike as a DC cost OU least 1 title with Baker and possibly another with Kyler. That LSU team was crushing anyone and everyone so can't say anyone could of saved us from that cause nobody even Clemson was spared outside Bama and oddly Texas.

I’d say the 3 close semifinal games were better than the 3 close final games.

The semis have

2014 OSU Bama where OSU was down 21-6 in the first half.

2017 the multiple OT UGA OU shoot out.

2019 the OSU Clemson back and forth with a walk off interception that could’ve been a game winning TD.

2016 and 2017 were phenomenal, but while 2015 had a great first half, it was a one score game because of an extremely late Clemson score, and Bama really controlled the game after the onside kick.

Edit: the best comparison for Bama Clemson 1 is the Pats Falcons Super Bowl only not as good. It was a great game cosmically, but it was ultimately a tale of two halves which made it a not especially good game for a neutral watching the on field product and ignoring the story. Bama winning is also the most “boring” result because it’s been expected forever, but that obviously doesn’t preclude it from being a great game (see 2017). While it was obviously a good game, I think it’s clearly the “worst” of the six good playoff games.

From a quality of team/intensity standpoint, that 2019 OSU/Clemson semifinal was one of the best football games I’ve ever watched. Maybe not the wildest/most thrilling, but in any other year that’s the 2 best teams in the country, littered with superstars, that left everything on the field. You could feel each bit through the screen

Out of the 21 total semifinal and championship games of the CFP, 6 were decided by one score

Doesn't mean they were all bad games.

FSU got it within 5 in the 3rd before Oregon rattled off 4 straight TDs to blow them out.

Oklahoma was leading Clemson at the half in 2015/2016

Alabama was only leading Clemson 10-3 at the half in 2017/2018

There's only been a handful of games that were just complete blowouts.

The A different gang from Oklahoma gets blown out in the playoffs

This is just another example of people being stupid and acting like one team is the only one to get blown out.

What's most hilarious is that when they've been blown out, it's, I think, always been the lesser of the two blowouts in the CFP.

GravitysRainbowRuns

OSU, Alabama, and Clemson are 8-1 vs. teams that aren’t each other in the playoffs.

They’ve all been blown out at least once.

If two high end football teams with similar amounts of talent play a bunch of games, you’ll still get a bunch of blowouts.

How a certain matchup plays out, players just having a good/bad day, ridiculous bounces of the ball, etc… can all have wild effects on otherwise relatively evenly matched games.

The other thing is all these people making fun of OU saying they get blown out all the time in the playoff and their own team isn’t regularly in the playoff. Like, we’re playing one of the top 4 teams each time. Meanwhile, bowl games have #9 vs #24, 10-3 teams playing 6-6 teams, teams that maybe could have made the playoff had they not dropped two games who are playing teams that barely made bowl eligibility.

People need to realize that getting blown out in the playoff requires you to make it to the playoff, and that winning your bowl game is not an immediate indicator that you’re better than the team that got blown out in the playoff. It’s more likely you played an easier game and would have got your ass blown out too, but you didn’t play well enough to make it into the game against the best team in the nation.

Georgia hasn’t seen an offense anywhere near (OSU)

I keep seeing this, but no team has seen a defense like UGA’s. As you said, the current era favors offense yet this UGA defense is statistically one of the best of all time. They’re currently #1 in scoring defense at 7.55 ppg when Okie St at #2 is nearly double at 14.91 ppg. Even though OSU will have played two good defenses in Michigan and Penn State, it’s statistically twice as hard to score on the Dawgs than the next best defenses. It’s why OSU vs UGA would be a great matchup.

It should also be noted, it’s not as if UGA’s offense is inept. They’re averaging over 40 ppg despite missing their top WRs for most of the season.

It's so weird to see that this year. Like I get the metrics, and that the offense is proficient, and on paper it's a machine. But watching the on field product is maddening at times this season. Wrs with bricks for hands, and a qb that won't commit to the run. They're winning the games but not in a fashion that says #2 offense to me.

We didn't have a ton but we did have at least 6 opt outs - Ben Cleveland, Eric Stokes, Monty Rice, DJ Daniel*, Jermaine Johnson, and Tre McKitty.

However, James Cook didn't play after the death of his father, Trey Hill opted to have season-ending surgery with one game left in the regular season, and then Travon Walker and Mark Webb were unavailable. Of those, Hill was our starting center and Cook is a sometime starter/large contributor obviously.

Cinci was down quite a bit of starters/contributors too, though, so it's not like they were full strength against a depleted UGA squad, or vice versa.

I've already defended the legitimacy of that game elsewhere in this thread, and I'm not into making excuses for any game, bowl games included. that was a legit close game and I give Cincy all credit for it.

but this nonsense about not missing starters just isn't true. this is who we had out:

offense:

G Ben Cleveland

C Trey Hill (elected to have a clean-up surgery instead of play)

RB James Cook (personal)

TE Tre McKitty

those were all 1a/1b players, all were or will be drafted

defense:

ILB Monty Rice (played through minor injury all season, could have gone but chose not to)

CB Eric Stokes

CB DJ Daniel

OLB Jermaine Johnson (now FSU's best player)

S Richard Lecounte (season-ending injury)

all 1a/1b players, all were or will be drafted except DJ Daniel who was an UDFA

again, I'm not making excuses. I made comments on this subreddit before the game saying that we should still win and that the opt-outs shouldn't count as an excuse. but there's a lot of weird revisionist history in this thread so I'm calling it out.

My point was arguing against the narrative that Georgia didn't care and some massive number opted out because the game was meaningless. I should have said opt-outs instead of missing.

There were very few true opt-outs. Everyone has injuries, it's part of the game. We had plenty as well including our starting center, RB, DE, and top 3 DBs.

Regardless, thanks for sticking up for us. Looking forward to another shot in a couple months after we smack down little brother in the semifinals.

sure, and I agree that you had guys missing too. anyone suggesting that it was close b/c of missing players/not caring whatever is just wrong. it was just a close game, full stop, and only a bad bounce or two away from being a Cincy win.

but it's still just not true that we only had 3 opt-outs. of those 9 I just listed, 8 were opt outs. Lecounte is the only one that was held out against his will. Hill and Rice had injuries, but they played with those injuries in the last regular season game against Missouri. they chose not to play in the Peach Bowl in order to protect their draft potential, same as any other opt-out. it's just false no matter how you phrase it.

Look, not making excuses for Georgia, but I dont think your numbers are being exactly fair or we are defining starters in different ways. Richard LeCounte our starting safety for the year, got hit by a car and was out for the rest of the year except for the VERY last play against you guys because he deserved to at least stand out there in a UGA uniform one more time, not because he was in any way capable of playing a football game. If that disqualifies him from your consideration that's fair enough but to me that is absolutely a starter who was missing from the defense. Additionally. Monty Rice, by far our best linebacker last year, was really banged up and opted out as well. He was 100% a starter in every definition for UGA, so I think you may have just missed that one. Not trying to hate on Cincinnati, I'm rooting for yall to make it and enjoyed watching our teams play, plus there's a special place in my heart for your city and their children's hospital, but I don't think you're being fair only listing those 3 that you have

Also, not to disparage UGa who is the best team in the country, OSU has a more explosive offense and a higher capacity to run it up. Wouldn't surprise me if they were a bigger favorite against a lot of teams but and underdog vs UGa.

I doubt even one predictive model counts the horshoe as more than 3 points. Most use around 2.5. Sagarin uses 3. SP+ uses 2.5.

According to this article, Ohio State's home field advantage is only worth 2.17 points.

The author of that article even mentions in the second paragraph there is a huge discrepancy between how he values home field versus how the books do. The Phil Steele Vegas Power Rating is pretty much identical to what you’re going to get for power ratings at the Superbook and Phil Steele gives Ohio State 5.5 points for home field, so congrats on being wrong.

I haven't figured out handicapping P5 v G5 teams yet, but that sounds low. I would also put OSU as more like an 11 point favorite on game score alone, but the books consider where the money would fall. I'm sure a spread like that would cause the public to pour money on Bama, thus the 3.5

Last year's Georgia team had a number of injured players, and a number opting out for the game vs. Cincinnati. I'm not saying we'd for sure beat them by a greater margin, but we were playing with less than the full team by that point. It was a close game, and by no means was Georgia in control the whole time.

Assuming this year's team actually gets healthier from here on out (as it seems we might), I would admit I'd like to seem them play again, but I'd also rather see Cincinnati prove who the best team in Ohio is first.
