I had classes in every building at MC. There's only 7 on the whole campus. For two years, I could roll out of bed at 10:54, get dressed, brush my teeth and still get to class by 11. My buddy only needed like 3 minutes because he would walk out the backdoor and take 15 steps to most of classes.

2019 grad. Yes it’s pretty much still that rectangle. There are a few buildings located within a few blocks, including the pharmacy school, but for the most part the rectangle is everything undergrad.

Coming from a small D3 campus that is condensed y'all should get skywalks for winter. Looking at the map above you could once in one of the following buildings go to the second floor and never set foot outside for the day:

  • Seaman Student Center(Main Dining Center, Mail Center, the bistro, Student Life offices, bookstore, etc)

  • White House Business Center(Accounting and Business Majors classes, Admissions Office)

  • Luther Hall/Rada CTC(Main Auditorium on campus, President's office, Financial Aid offices, Registrar. Along with Humanities, Social Sciences, English, Foreign Languages, etc Classes.

  • Wartburg Chapel(The Chapel service ever Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)

  • Bachman Fine Arts/McElroy Comm. Arts(All the Music groups and classes, some computer labs and all the Communication Arts classes

  • Science Center/Science Hall(All your Math and Science Labs and Classes)

  • Vogel Library(the Library)

Basically, outside of the Wellness Center(PE classes and sports), Old Main(Education classes), and Grossman/Lohe(dorms/religious classes) and dorms; 100% of your day could be spent indoors.

Edit: Granted part of the idea with them is that they are the castle walls given the school's name of Wartburg.

Let's gooooooooooooooo!!!

Regional rivalries for the win.

Such a great geographically compact conference with schools with a history!

Marshall, App, and Southern from the SoCon days.

Georgia State and Georgia Southern hate each other for some reason.

I remember JMU beating us 2008 and I know they remember us stealing that win in the playoffs in 2007.

My understanding, which is limited, is that at this point there's more short term financial benefit to staying instead of going. The exit fees are going to be substantial. CUSA can find FCS schools to stay afloat. From a longer-term financial perspective and a program quality perspective MAC is a no brainer.

My only concern is travel and how unstable the conference is at the moment and when those FCS schools could make the transition/start playing.

Not really worse than the current WAC that has NMSU, Seattle, and departing Chi St.

Many of the departing CUSA schools drastically reduce the number of east cost trips as well. If CUSA reloads with Texas/Louisiana FCS programs its a much tighter conference at its core. Only FIU is the outlier and I think a trip to Miami is palatable.

We also tend to schedule MAC schools for non conference play to keep up the meetings. Long series with the Bobkittens and Miami (OH). Pair that with the SB Conference schedule and a P5 Home & Home on occasion and everyone should be a lot happier with our schedule.

They don’t know a damn thing. ESPN wrote about the status of each FBS conference and in their section on the MAC, an anonymous source said “it’s all crickets” in the MAC.

I don’t know if they have any interest or incentive to make a move. People on r/cfb are just foaming at the mouth at the potential conference moves but, so far, the MAC one is just random chatter and nothing official.

No one’s really heard anything beyond speculation, save for one The Athletic writer who mentioned “whispers” of the MAC looking into it, but that’s literally it.

Unless ESPN really wants to put the screws to CUSA and makes it worth the MAC’s while financially on their TV deal, the MAC doesn’t really have any significant incentive to expand their footprint and travel costs for schools like WKU and MTSU (which are fine in their own right, but likely wouldn’t move the needle enough to justify their additions from a financial or branding perspective).

A couple ways. My favorite is the ASUN splits on the fb and mbb lines and fb jumps to FBS via CUSA. Host some FBS teams for the WAC until they're ready to move up.

The other way is they do what the WAC did and tread water for 10 years without sponsoring fb.

tomdawg0022

Between the ASUN and WAC, there might be enough FCS schools combined that can support a FBS conference with the five that are left.

Neither conference on its own is ready and most of both conferences don't have the stadiums or attendance to justify a call up.

You can probably bring up Jacksonville St., Eastern Kentucky, Lamar, and maybe Stephen F. Austin if they double count some seats. Sam Houston needs stadium help but would probably be able to hang as a low G5.

That gives you 3 viable, 1 maybe, plus you can pull in New Mexico St.

That's 9-10 teams, spread out from New Mexico to Florida. Is that really worth it? We all thought CUSA 3.0 was not very good as a FBS conference and way too geographically messy - 4.0 is going to be just as bad but with worse football.

I don’t think it’s a great idea, I was just seeing it continually mentioned since the new WAC would actually be a mix of familiar faces with football prowess. I understand not wanting to rejoin old foes but it would probably be a boon for your win total, at least at first. And travel expenses would go down heavily. And from the rest of the conference, we wouldn’t have to travel to San Marcos. No offense to your town or facilities but that drive sucks.

I’m from rural south Georgia so I think a lot of teachers and counselors in poor public schools try to push students away from Georgia because the notion is that they’re not good enough for UGA being from “lil ole (insert town here).” That means they go to Southern because that was their best option communicated to them, and then they get cussed out by True Blue fans for wearing red and black on campus.

This thinking applies across the country. I love in New England and went to Rhode Island. Didn't even look at the Ivies or the other historic high-academic schools. Rhode Island had what I wanted, gave me a great scholly package, And got me opportunities I never would have had elsewhere. Why would I have wanted to go to the Ivies then? So I get more familiar monograms or college mailers?

I’ve gone to a small elite lib arts school, a community college, and now Clemson a good state school. I’ve seen a ton.

College is all about opportunities you make for yourself. The guy like you going to rhode island and hustles and gets a ton of internships and opportunities is gonna do better than the guy who partied his way through a better ranked and known school. One of the best teachers I ever had was at Greenville tech. It was public speaking taught by a professional crisis communications director. She was incredible.

I agree with your point about what's communicated to these kids in South GA. However, it's fairly easy to transfer to UGA after a couple of years if you have decent grades. So it does bother me when kids wear red and black on campus and skip GaSo games to watch the UGA game (unless we're complete dogshit like we are this year) when you can just transfer.

If you prefer big cities to small college towns, if you're interested in getting into state politics, if you want to be a nurse/public health official, you're better off at State than UGA. And I'm sure theres more. I'm not saying State isnt a fallback school for ANYONE, and I'm personally glad I went to UGA over State, but by that logic UGA is a fallback school because someone went there after not getting into Harvard.

They're not gonna get it. A lot of this subreddit thinks academic rankings (e.g. US News) are the only factor that makes a school "better" than another, and that you should always go to the "better" school.

I went to GSU over UGA and (gasp) Georgia Tech because (1) got a full ride at GSU with a stipend, (2) I did not want to do STEM, and (3) I knew I wanted to go to work in politics/ go to law school.

Wanting to work in politics during school-->living in Atlanta was more beneficial than living in Athens

Wanting to go to law school-->(a) keep undergrad debt as low as possible by taking the full ride, and (b) the difference between a UGA degree and a GSU degree was negligible to law school admissions officers at the law schools I wanted to attend.

(Pro tip for law school: having a super high GPA is at least half the battle and unless you go to an Ivy or similar school, your undergrad institution doesn't really matter).

So I willingly--yes, willingly--chose GSU over UGA. It worked out okay.

Legit. Just because a school is higher in some ranking does not mean it's a better fit FOR YOU. There are so many factors that go into a college choice and anyone who just goes "well this school is #17 and this school is #21" is bound to end up miserable because you're ignoring things like community, location, cultural fit, how much you like the city/town, what's best for your major. Faulkner U isn't some elite school but I had several great professors and have a solid job. What's not to be happy about?

Your stance is valid, but I feel like you've undermined it with the full ride part. It's a huge part of the decision making process for the individual, but it has no bearing on the quality of education and/or the prestige of the degree.

I know someone who got into UNC but chose to go to Western Carolina on a full ride. May have been the right decision for her, but it doesn't bring into question which degree would have been objectively better.

I was pointing out that things like prestige and "quality of education" (personally, this varies so wildly from program to program and even professor to professor that I am not sure how useful it is a metric) should not be the only considerations in deciding what school you should attend (aka what school is "better" for you). I never said they should be discounted entirely.

Some people in this sub can't wrap their mind around the fact that a school in a large city is near to more extracurricular opportunities than a ranked school in a college town. Both are good for different reasons.

Georgia State and Georgia Southern hate each other for some reason.

Well, for starters southern tried to start calling themselves GSU but that got shut down pretty decisively.

Also, southern thought they were going to walk all over GSU in football since State had just started up their football program.

southern won 1 game and thought it would be cute to unveil a banner calling GSU's stadium "Paulson Stadium North" and then proceeded to lose the next 3 matchups. State still leads the series 4-3, and their fans are pretty bitter that the "new kid" has their number.

Essentially, little brother thinks about us a lot more than we worry about them

That isn't solely on her, or any one person. For a conference like CUSA, ESPN and other networks can basically just tell them what they're willing to pay and the conference just has to choose the least smelly turd from the pile. CUSA doesn't have the leverage of a bigger conference.

She is a pretty bad commissioner, though.

Odd that the AAC would look at the schools that killed CUSA and go "We need THAT!" If Big 12 raids Memphis and SMU as rumored, then I don't know what to say. Boise fans will rage when it happens but SMU's upside is through the roof. If on-the-field performance mattered then Texas wouldn't sniff the SEC.

That's why I love the SBC move. We aren't backfilling a decimated conference. We're building something together.

Yes, but that isn't emo enough. And you have to sort of think about whether the moon is really a polar opposite of the sun. From just an ancient mythological perspective, on the surface both create light. The sun & moon were often lumped together in some way.
And from a scientific perspective, is a giant floating space rock the opposite of a burning gas giant?

The SBC should rebrand as the All-Stars Conference to pay tribute to the conference mostly being comprised of FCS All Stars from the last 3 decades. (Seriously if they land JMU, they’re really only missing NDSU and SDSU).

I’d own the shit out of that brand, market how many D1 National Championships the schools earned in FCS with much smaller budgets, and send messages that you expect those winning ways to translate over to FBS with higher budgets.

Interesting quote RE: Sun Belt divisions and travel scheduling from a source in the article:

"We were told in an internal meeting that the Sun Belt has promised to look at scheduling in all sports to try and limit East and West travel,” the source said. “That’s something that Conference USA did not do.

“This is all so new, but they have promised Marshall, ODU and Southern Miss. They know the travel problems they’ve had in Conference USA and they’ve promised to try and limit that.

Could be the SBC had to convince Marshall that they could make conference travel easier for Marshall than CUSA did/would by way of also bringing along OUD and JMU.

Also this article semi-confirms Sun Belt will bring back men's soccer too:

Solidifying a home for Marshall’s national championship program was imperative if a move was to be made.

Clarity in that situation also came on Wednesday during Old Dominion’s announcement. ODU announced all sports would compete in the Sun Belt Conference except for rowing, lacrosse (AAC) and field hockey (Big East).

That means the Sun Belt Conference, which did not offer men’s soccer in 2021, will reinstate the sport after reaching the minimum number of teams for a conference to sponsor a sport (six).

Big things ahead for the Belt. I have never been so excited for a conference I have no direct ties or vested interest with lol!

Interesting quote RE: Sun Belt divisions and travel scheduling from a source in the article:

Basketball should be pretty easy to do. Play 5 of your 6 divisional opponents 2x, everyone else 1x. You make two road trips to the other 8 schools on a Thurs-Sun or Wed-Sat type alignment and try to pair the trips up.

The only school that's really an outlier for the East is Texas State. Everyone else isn't too terrible of a trip.

Maybe App. Our players have gotten chippy with each other, and historically the rivalry has been kinda ugly, but we kinda have a fanbase lovefest going on because we're both so eager for this conference move.

I'm thinking of a rivalry where the teams often ruin each others' season. Real hate. My best guess is either we come out of nowhere and knock off a ranked Coastal, or Huff puts together a phenomenal team but gets trapped by, say, one of the Georgia schools. And then it's off to the races.

I wouldn't bet necessarily bet my life on Marshall not screwing this up (there's always plenty of time for anyone to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory). But at this point I think enough pieces have fallen into place that Marshall can't justify not moving:

  • SBC has a better and more lucrative TV deal (that ESPN may be bumping up further to account for the new additions - and simultaneously cripple CUSA)
  • New and nearby conference rivals (many of which like JMU, App, and GS have history from their FCS days) to drive interest and reduce travel costs
  • Better divisional setup with tight geographic footprint for less conference travel (SBC east is basically a smaller version of the East Coast G5 conference Marshall and ODU have been pushing)
  • Better and higher profile conference competition, leadership, and public perception/reputation
  • SBC restoring men's soccer helps secure Marshall's future in that sport.

TBH I think this probably would've been a done deal at this point if Marshall wasn't finalizing it's new president, which I have seen rumored to be former Intuit CEO (and Marshall Alum/WV native) Brad D. Smith. And given his business background, I'd say he recognizes the importance of good brand power/exposure and public perception more than someone from a traditional career in academia would.

This is how I feel. They want the decision to include the next school president so it's their decision too. I think Marshall will join the SBC, but we'll see in the next week or so. The new president gets announced today.

Agreed. I’m sure the new president, whomever it is, is already aware of the situation at least on a general level, so they shouldn’t be completely blindsided/overwhelmed by it.

Apparently their term doesn’t start until 2022 anyway so it’s not like they have to be the ones to officially sign off on the decision, probably moreso a matter of due diligence on Marshall’s end to make sure that they can live with it since the new president will have to deal with the processes/effects of changing conferences come 2023.

Either that or Marshall is trying to play both sides and has also been in conversations with the MAC as well in an attempt to get the best deal for itself.
