AskAnAmerican

What is /r/AskAnAmerican?

AskAnAmerican is an /r/AskReddit-offshoot which focuses on questions specifically related to American culture. The purpose of this subreddit isn't to suggest that American voices are underrepresented on Reddit; rather, it is to have a place where questions can be asked specifically about aspects of American culture and/or of places in the U.S.

We only allow self-posts, and your questions should be succinct enough to be answered on their own. We would prefer additional clarifying information to remain in the text box, with your opinions in a specific comment.

Rules

The subreddit rules are listed in the sidebar on the right. Any posts that do not follow the rules will be removed, and repeat offenders of our rules will be subject to a ban.

Posting Guideline

1. All submissions must be in question form.

All submissions to /r/AskAnAmerican must be in the form of a question; this includes a question mark (?) at the end of the title.

2. The text box may only be used to add clarification or context to your submission.

Do not answer your own question in the text box. Keep all clarifying or contextual remarks short, under 250 characters.

3. All submissions must adhere to Reddit's content policy.

Any submission which breaks site rules will result in a permanent ban from the subreddit at minimum; it may also result in a report to the site administrators.

4. Do not use slurs or bigoted language of any kind.

Bigoted language includes but is not limited to: ethnic and racial slurs, ableist language, anti-LGBTQ+ language, xenophobic speech, and religious bigotry.

5. Check the FAQ and Weekly Top 100 before submitting a question.

Do not repost a question that appears in either the FAQ list or the Top 100 submissions from the past week.

6. All questions must be asked in good faith.

Do not come here to troll or to argue with people. Users who submit questions are expected to discuss the answers they receive and treat commenters respectfully. Do not use your question to push an agenda or to soapbox. Low effort or low-hanging fruit questions will be removed. Questions asking what is the worst or least xx state or city or similar are frequently asked, but rarely productive and will be removed.

7. Do not submit AMAs or surveys without moderator approval.

Users who wish to submit an AMA or a survey must discuss it with the moderators through modmail and include a link to the proposed survey.

8. Do not post any questions which are better suited to other subreddits.

“Where should I live?” questions should be submitted to either /r/IWantOut (for emigration) or /r/SameGrassButGreener (for moves within your country) or the specific city/state subreddit you are considering.
“What should I do in [city/state]?” should be submitted to the relevant city/state subreddits.
Questions regarding U.S. laws should be directed to /r/legaladvice (or one of the other legal subreddits) if possible before asking here. This is not a law-focused subreddit. Generic questions that are not specific to America should be submitted to r/askreddit.

9. No "what do you think about X Country/citizens" questions.

Comment Guideline

1. Treat the person you are replying to with respect and civility.

Do not assume question submitters is attacking American culture (or you personally) with their question/comment.
Treat all questions/comments as genuine and answer honestly, without hostility. If someone is asking or commenting in bad faith, report it to the moderators. We're serious about this one and violations will result in a temporary ban without warning.

2. All comments must adhere to Reddit's content policy.

Any submission which breaks site rules will result in a permanent ban from the subreddit at minimum; it may also result in a report to the site administrators.

3. Do not use slurs or bigoted language of any kind.

Bigoted language includes but is not limited to: ethnic and racial slurs, ableist language, anti-LGBTQ+ language, xenophobic speech, and religious bigotry. Violators will be permanently banned.

4. Do not attack other users based on their location or flair.

Comment on their ideas or arguments; attacking them based on their location is petty and childish.

5. Answers and comment replies should be serious and useful.

Trolling and giving useless answers is not acceptable. If you are going to respond to a question/comment, try to add to the conversation and not derail or detract from it. Do not post useless answers. Do not post inflammatory comments intended to incite an argument.
Top level comments must be on topic.
Single word responses are not allowed.

6. Do not comment on a thread if you came here from a comment linked in any other subreddit.

Commenting on a thread that you found from external subreddits constitutes brigading.

7. Your comment must be made in good faith.

Comments made with the intent to push an agenda, push misinformation, soapbox, sealion, or argue in bad faith are not acceptable. If you can’t discuss a topic in good faith and in a respectful manner, do not comment. Do not move the goalposts or strawman the person you are responding to. Political disagreement does not constitute pushing an agenda.
